Salisbury attractions, local Salisbury attractions, Wiltshire

Salisbury is the proud home of one of the UK’s most magnificent cathedrals and boasts the tallest spire in Britain at 404 foot high. The elegant spire of Salisbury Cathedral not only dominates the city but can also be seen from an impressive seven-mile radius. Interestingly the body of the building was built back in 1220 over a period of 38 years but the spire wasn’t added until a later date. Today it still has its visitors in awe and is certainly worthy of a look.

Whilst visiting the Salisbury area the other must see attraction is that of Stonehenge. This unique World Heritage site is under the care of English Heritage and still remains a source of mystery as it why it was built. Although many theories exist as to what it was used for our lack of knowledge only adds to the fascination of this structure.

On a race meeting day Salisbury Racecourse has to be one of the best days out in the area. The racecourse is situated just 4 miles from the centre of the city and has been a racecourse site since the 16th century, enjoying as much popularity today as it did back then. For information on forthcoming fixtures simply check out the details on their website.

One of the finest country houses in the Salisbury area is Wilton House, the home to the 17th Earl of Pembroke. If any of the rooms appear familiar to you it is probably due to the fact that the house has appeared in several modern day movies including The Madness of King George and Mrs Brown. Highlights of Wilton House include the stunning Double Cube Room and the 21 acres of landscaped parkland.

Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum is an award-winning museum with an astonishing diversity that is guaranteed to find something of interest for all its visitors. The collection varies from an intriguing insight into how Stonehenge could have been built alongside many important finds from the area as well as displays covering Wedgwood, a prized costume collection and important artworks
